MISSION POSSIBLE: Generosity Prompts Some Serious Attempts to Leap (Center for Lay Ministries Column) By Carol Dawson

The many volunteers and the staff of the Center for Lay Ministries (CLM) are jumping for joy. Our community and the local Jeffersonville Meijer store just donated $13,940 in gift cards to be used for food to help our pantry remain stocked. This donation was from the fall/holiday campaign. Meijer gets a big thumbs-up for maintaining their Simply Give program, which assists local food pantries stay supplied with food. The Simply Give program has helped neighborhood food pantries keep their shelves stocked since November 2008.

The Meijer website provides information proving the success of this program. â??This signature program has generated more than $34.2 million â?? or 376.2 million meals â?? thanks to the continued generosity and support of Meijer customers, team members and food pantry partners who are committed to helping feed hungry families. Nation-wide, this past fall campaign drew more than $2.2 million, equaling nearly 25 million meals for hungry families across the Midwest. According to Feeding America, $1 equals 11 meals.â?? During our local Clark County Simply Give campaign, Meijer customers are encouraged to purchase a $10 (or more) Simply Give donation card upon checkout. Once the card is purchased, the donation is converted into a Meijer Food-Only Gift Card and donated directly to a local food pantry/bank, and for the past several years, CLM has been selected by our Jeffersonville store.

This amazingly generous program has been running three times a year to help fulfill the needs of CLM when we need it most: Spring, Fall and Holiday. In addition, instead of determining what food to donate, the Simply Give program allows CLM the flexibility to choose the grocery items best suited for the families we serve in Clark County. CLMâ??s Executive Director, Greg Henderzahs, stated, â??Meijer Simply Give campaign allows the Center to purchase certain foods that are not normally provided through our usual sources. In addition, these extra dollars allow CLM to provide more food to our clients.â?? The generosity from Clark County residents and businesses have kept us jumping and leaping for joy so often that we are contemplating bringing in a trampoline to save our joints from the wear and tear. Thank you Meijer and all who have big-heartedly contributed to help those less fortunate.
